The Morning Union from Springfield, Massachusetts (2024)

42 SPORTS THE SPRINGFIELD UNION, SPRINGFIELD, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1961 SPORTS Four ACFL Teams Put Streaks on Line Newark, Hartford in Battle of Unbeatens; Acorns Risk Perfect Mark at Richmond An inter-division clash involving the Newark Bears and HartCharter Oaks, undeforded features the seven Arlantic Coast Foothall Leaguel program this weekend. Two Sunday Games The Hartford fray tops the schedule Saturday night when the Springfield Acorns and Pittsburgh Ironmen, also sec action against Richmond and Ilazleton, respectively. On the same night. the Boston Sweepers tackle the Mohawk Valley Falcons at Herkimer, N. and Jersey Giants take on the Westchester Crusaders at Mt.

Vernon, N. Y. A pair of Sunday contests complete the weekend card. The Providence Steamrollers play at Portland and the lone afternoon game of the weekend will pit the Atlanta Spartans against the Harrisburg Caps on the latter's field. The surprising Hartford eleven is pacing the Northern Division! of the circuit with a 3-0 record.

Newark. the defending champion, has won its two games but is a step behind Pittsburgh in the Southern sector as the Ironmen are 3-0. Power on Ground Devoting little attention to the pass, Coach Fred Wallner has developed a powerful ground offensive that has brought the Oaks victories over Portland, Providence and Boston more than proved a their status as a title contender. Led by Chic Henry, Maurice Sykes and Jerry Johnson, the Oaks have, advanced 723 yards by rushing as compared to 213 by air. On the other hand, the Bears have displayed a balanced attack and a superb defense that limited their two foes to a mere 62 yards on the ground, an indication of a meeting at Hartford between the irresistible force and the immovable body.

Springfield. seeking its third straight at Richmond. has, brought back the veteran Jim Traficant to share the quarterbacking with Jerry Yost. The Virginia Rebels who gave Pittsburgh a stern battle. seem to be coming along and could mean trouble for the title-minded Acorns.

The pace-setting Ironmen will seek to make Hazleton their fourth straight victim. This, incidentally. is the second part! of the home-and-home series between the two clubs, which is also true of the ProvidencePortland contest.
