Obituary for Jean Brooks

In Loving Memory:Obituaries June 16, 2024 - Smokey Barn News (5)Jean Smith (Mayes) Brooks, aged 101, of Hixson TN, went to be with her Savior and Lord Jesus on April 28, 2024. She was born in Adams on August 30, 1922, to Paul Beasley and Verda (Smith) Mayes, and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1946 with a major in History. She was teaching Spanish, Math and History at Bell High School when she met the love of her life, Newton Brooks, just home from the Pacific in WW2, and was his devoted wife and companion until his passing in 2014. They spent the first 17 of their 67 years together on their farm in Adams, and Jean was known to say that “the farm’s best crop is children!” They moved to Chattahoochee, Florida in 1966, and after Newton retired, they became avid square dancers; they traveled together both in the U.S. and abroad, and spent many summers working at the Presbyterian (PCA) Conference Center in Brevard, N.C. Jean “never met a stranger,” and was loved by everyone who knew her. Even in a wheelchair for the past eighteen months in a long-term care facility, she had an encouraging word for all of her fellow residents.

In Loving Memory:Obituaries June 16, 2024 - Smokey Barn News (6)She is survived by 8 of their 10 children: Jim (Jackie) of Adairville KY, Harriet Cash of Hixson, Henry Knox (Nadine) of Sneads FL, Robert (Gwen) of Land O’Lakes FL, Leslie (Gail) of Atlanta GA, John Polk of Amman Jordan, twins Elizabeth (Robert) Pollard of Waxahachie TX and Evelyn (Nick) Wiley of Eads, TN; 22 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by, in addition to her husband, daughters Martha Jane and Anne.

Everyone was invited to join the family in a service celebrating her life at Adams Methodist Church, at 10 AM on June 15th, 2024.

Jimmy Ray was born October 10, 1968, in Springfield. He was a roofer and was of the Baptist faith. Jimmy Ray enjoyed shooting pool and spending time with his friends.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday June 12th at 3:00 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Pastor Russell Mills officiating. Interment followed in Springfield Memorial Gardens with Wilburn Smith, Aaron Stewart, Dennis Morris, Dallas Honaker, Jonathan Honaker, Justin Johnson, Frankie Wells, and Robert Draper serving as pallbearers. The family received friends on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Lee was born October 16, 1957, in Nashville, to Ann Stark Krisle and to the late Earl Coleman “Buddy” Krisle. He was a graduate of East Robertson High School Class of 1976, was a member of Springfield Baptist Church, and was the owner and operator of Lee Krisle Lawn Care for many years. Lee enjoyed his horses, his cows, and his dogs.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday June 12th at 1:00 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Hargrove officiating. Interment followed in the Martin’s Chapel Cemetery with friends and family serving as pallbearers. The family received friends on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Lanell was born March 29, 1944, in Conway, SC, to the late Nathan Ernest and Sadie Thompkins Hardwick. She was retired from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, was a member of Martin’s Chapel Methodist Church, and was a former member of the Red Hat Society. Lanell enjoyed bowling, cross stitching, crafts, going camping, and she loved to play Wii with her grandson.

Funeral services wereconducted Friday June 14th at 1:00 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Pastor Corbin Madden officiating. Interment followed in Springfield Memorial Gardens with Michael Ellis, Dalton Cooper, Brian Jackson, Leon Sloan, Allen Hopcraft, Bo Anderson, Josh Stout, Tommy Anderson, and Carl Adams serving as pallbearers. The family received friends on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mac was born September 24, 1943, in Franklin, KY, to the late Sammie Lee and Alma Lee Grant Anderson. He was a retired machine operator with Precision Products, was a member of the Chosen Few Motorcycles Club, the NRA, the CMT Ebate club, and was of the Baptist faith. Mac enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, grilling, NASCAR, and riding his motorcycle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Joyce Ann Jackson Anderson, his brothers, Claude Anderson, J. Mart Anderson, and his sisters, Lucille Choate, and Wilma “Bobbie” Scott.

Linda Gail Casteel Cantrell, 72, of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024. Born September 11, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Renow Carson Casteel and Betty Bowling Pentecost.

Linda was a retired nurse having worked at General Hospital, Skyline Hospital and Centennial Hospital. She was a faithful Christian and member of Goodlettsville Church. Linda loved anything and everything Vols related. She loved the University of Tennessee to the core.

Barbara Hardin, born on January 14, 1938, in Nashville, has peacefully passed away on June 10 2024. Barbara will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Barbara is reunited in heaven with her loving parents, J.T and Ida Smith, as well as her siblings, Fred Smith, Betty Watkins, and Frances Huffines.

Her memory will be cherished by her surviving family: children, Mark Clark (Dawn), Michele Clark, Melinda Stephens; grandchildren, Faith, Heather, Ashley, and Stetson; several great-grandchildren; and her sister, Shirley Ralph. Additionally, she leaves behind several nieces and nephews who will always remember her fondly.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at 12pm in the chapel of Austin and Bell Funeral in Greenbrier with Brother Nathan Washburn officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Church Cemetery, with Charlie Joe Draughon, Thomas Perko, Greg Glenn, Tony Cobb, Trent Cobb and Robert Alan Hall serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4:00pm- 7:00pm at the funeral home and Wednesday from 10am till time of Service at 12pm.

Mrs. Callis was born January 2, 1934 in Springfield, Tennessee to the late Earl Dixon and Lou Emma Osborne Simmons. She worked as a dietary at NHC and was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenbrier. In her spare time, she loved her flowers and cooking.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Callis is preceded in death by her 1st husband, Robert Scott Draughon, 2nd husband, Charles Callis, brothers, Dixon Simmons and Carl Simmons, sisters, Maynell Kirby, Geradine Patton, Lois Campbell, Rebecca Johnson and Shirley Cobb and son-in-law, Bobby Hall and brother-in-law, Jimmy Moore.

Obituary for Burton Glover

In Loving Memory:Obituaries June 16, 2024 - Smokey Barn News (45)Judge Burton Dunn Glover passed away on June 10, 2024, after a brief illness.

Services were held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Springfield, Tennessee, with Reverend Jason Jones officiating. The family received friends Thursday, June 13, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Austin and Bell Funeral Home in Springfield, Tennessee, and Friday, June 14, 2024 at the church, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery in Springfield.

Burton Dunn Glover was born on January 3, 1939, to Burton Wilks Glover and Mary Louise Dunn Glover of Springfield, Tennessee. He was a high school graduate of Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tennessee. He then studied at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. As an undergraduate, he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Order of the Gownsmen academic society. Later in life, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Nashville School of Law. Following the death of his father during his senior year of college, Burton assumed control of Glover Auto Company, an auto dealership established by his grandfather, H. B. Glover. He later became a partner in Barber Motor Company, an auto dealership in Springfield. He then changed professional course, attaining a legal degree, and pursing the practice of law. He served as General Sessions Judge and Juvenile Judge for Robertson County. During that time, he was elected President of the Juvenile Judges for the State of Tennessee. He was instrumental in establishing the Robertson County Recovery Court, a compassionate legal avenue for those struggling with addiction. After retiring from the bench, he served as a County Commissioner for Robertson County, and continued with a private legal practice. Judge Glover was also a lifelong farmer, operating Hereford Hills Farm until his death. This family farm, established by his grandfather H.B. Glover, has raised cattle, tobacco, and other crops for over 100 years. He loved dogs, especially German Shepherds. Several loyal shepherds preceded him in death and await him in Heaven. Judge Glover loved athletic endeavors. He supported the Springfield Yellow Jackets, witnessing his children play for that school. He also loved the Tennessee Vols, representing his wife’s alma mater, and the Vanderbilt Commodores, representing his mother’s alma mater. He loved operating heavy equipment, motorcycles, muscle cars, boating, snow skiing, and water skiing. He loved his friends and had many tales to tell of their escapades through the years. Judge Glover was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Springfield, the Robertson County Bar Association, the New Chapel Men’s Club, and was a Trustee of the Glenn Memorial Women’s Clubs.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Ann Louise Glover Baker, and his brother-in-law, Dr. Joseph T. Fuhrmann He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Suzanne Cook Glover; beloved children Colonel (Ret) Burton Cook (Anna) Glover of Tampa, Florida, Dr. William Bryan Glover of Nashville, Tennessee, and Dr. Annie Glover (Phil) Spicer of Springfield; grandchildren William Emerson Glover, Molly Glover, Helen Glover, Katherine Glover, Phillip Spicer and Burton Spicer; niece Sara Baker Cloward of Oakdale, California and brother-in-law Bruce P. Baker of Oakdale, California, sister-in-law, Mary C. Fuhrmann of Murray, Kentucky, nephew Christopher Fuhrmann of Santa Clara, California, and niece Maria Fuhrmann Humphries of Memphis, Tennessee.

She was born on September 14, 1939, to the late Luther Johnson and Ada Sims Ibay.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years Jerry D. Moreland Sr. She was a member of Madisonville Baptist Church, Madisonville, Tennessee.

Deceased siblings are sister Viva Johnson Sims and brothers Kelly Johnson and Osborn Lewis Johnson, half-brother William Luther Johnson Jr.

She is survived by her children, Edwin Moreland (Sharon) of Rockford, Illinois, Debbie Cox of Chattanooga, TN, and Jerry Moreland Jr., (Cyndi) of Pleasant View, TN, also 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Brother L.B. Johnson of Dunlap, TN, sister Robbie Dean Sheffield of Arroyo Grande, CA, and half-sister Kathie Johnson Grissom of Tullahoma, TN.

She enjoyed traveling with her spouse Jerry in their RV to many different areas and staying in campgrounds and meeting new people.

Mr. Redmon was born May 5, 1985 in Ann Arbor, MI to William Thomas Redmon of MA, and Robyn Redmon-Fleming and her husband, Mark Fleming, of Springfield. He worked as a printing press operator.

Mr. Redmon is preceded in death by his grandparents, John Edward Madden and Shirlee Mae Madden.

A time of visitation was held with the family on Sunday, June 9, 2024 from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. at Robertson County Funeral Home. Following the visitation his remains were cremated.

Ray was born April 25, 1960 in Springfield to the late Robert Marvin and Nellie Winters Lambert. He was a graduate of East Robertson High School. He loved his family and his dogs. In Loving Memory:Obituaries June 16, 2024 - Smokey Barn News (69)Betty Louise Hopkins Akins, age 82, of Springfield, Tennessee, died Thursday, June 6, 2024, at NorthCrest Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View at 2:00PM on Monday, June 10th, with Bro. Kenny Hix officiating. Burial followed in EverRest of Cheatham with her son, Timmy Akins, and Tanner Landrum, Brandon Landrum, Eddie Arnold, Corey Richardson, Leslie Richardson serving as pallbearers.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Monday from 11:00AM until the hour of service at 2:00PM.

Mrs. Akins was born on October 3, 1941, in Huntsville, Alabama, to the late Ruben & Mattie Maddle Hopkins. She was a homemaker and a member of Martins Chapel Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Akins; a son, Bobby Akin; great-granddaughter, Mattie Akins: 4 brothers; and 2 sisters.

Obituary for Joseph W. Jones

In Loving Memory:Obituaries June 16, 2024 - Smokey Barn News (74)Joseph W. Jones, a cherished member of the Greenbrier, TN community, passed away on June 5, 2024, at the age of 93. He was born on February 21, 1931, in Robertson County to the late George and Hattie Jones.

Joseph was a dedicated worker, having spent many years in the construction and maintenance field. He lent his skills and expertise to DWC Inc. and Rogers Group, where he made lasting contributions to the projects he worked on.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Joseph found joy and fulfillment in his personal life. He was married to the love of his life, Shirley Jones, who predeceased him. Together, they shared countless cherished memories and built a life filled with love and devotion.

Joseph was preceded in death by his siblings, George Arnold Jones, J. B. Jones, Calvin Jones, Ray Jones, Annie Lou Jones, and Roma Jones. Though they may have left this world before him, their memories will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.

Joseph is survived by his son, Ricky Jones, his nephew, Charles King and grandchildren, Brandy Lamell, Jennifer Jones and Ricky Jr.
