She has been at one time a singer, swimwear designer, and fashion model; her mother lovingly called the princess her "wild child" — she is the sister of Albert II of Monaco and Princess Caroline.

She was the passenger in the car when her mother was killed in an accident on a mountain road 13 September 1982. Rumours persist to this day that Stéphanie was driving. She was unable to attend her mother's funeral because she was in hospital with injuries from the crash.

In February 1986 Stéphanie released her first single with the French label 'Carrere', under the production of Yves Roze. The song Ouragan (Hurricane) and its English version "Irresistible" quickly reached the international Top 10, reportedly selling more than 5 million copies. In September, she released a full album called "Besoin" reportedly selling more than 2.5 million copies(also released as 'Stephanie' in some countries) with 8 new songs, including 'Flash' (in French), which was released as a single and reached the hit parade all over Europe. In January, 1987, she released the single "Young Ones Everywhere" to benefit UNICEF. By the end of 1986, she was the queen of all European media, with her voice on the top ten on the radio, her video clips recorded in exotic lands like Mauritius, appearances on TV, and her picture in every magazine.

In 1987 Stephanie moved to Los Angeles to dedicate herself to music and live with her then-boyfriend, Mario Oliver. However, it took 5 years for the product to come out, and sales were disappointing, only 3000 copies. The album had 10 songs, including the single 'Winds of Chance' for which the video clip was recorded in the Canary Islands. The producers tried to leave her Europop style behind and create a more grown-up album with English-only lyrics, though she sounded better in French. Her first and only live tour took place in the summer of 1991 in Europe and South America to promote the album called Stéphanie released in the U.S. by Sony Music. U.S. critics gave the album negative reviews and focused on her privileged background, which they felt discredited her efforts. She also recorded "In the Closet" with Michael Jackson under the alias of Mystery Girl for his album, Dangerous. She then ended her pop music career.

In the shadows I pretend
But my heartache just won't end
Every day I wear this guise
Hiding the truth behind my eyes
Keep my emotions in the blend
I fool myself, I must contend
Searching for guidance it must not show
Pretending to love who I really am

In the shadows I hide my heart
A secret longing tearing me apart
Without my safety glance, my soul takes flight
But I keep it hidden, it's out of sight
Dancing on the edge of a lie
Using the happy I keep inside
Every word I speak is just a lie
Deep down I don't know the real reason why
Why, why, I don't know why
Why, why, I can't deny
Why, why, I can't deny
Why, why, I don't know why
Why, why, I can't deny

I can't deny, I don't know why
Why, why, I don't know why Why, why, I don't know why

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Stephanie's song "I Don't Know Why" delve into the theme of hiding one's true emotions and putting on a façade to mask inner pain and confusion. The singer expresses the struggle of pretending to be someone they are not, wearing a disguise every day to conceal their true feelings. This pretense may be rooted in a search for guidance or a desire not to reveal their vulnerability and true self. However, despite the outward appearance of love and happiness, the singer acknowledges that deep down they do not understand the genuine reason behind their actions or emotions. The repetition of the phrase "I don't know why" reflects the singer's confusion and the inability to fully comprehend their own behavior and emotions.

This song explores the internal conflict of presenting a false image to the world while grappling with a hidden longing that tears them apart. The lyricist uses the metaphor of hiding in the shadows to convey the secretive nature of their emotional struggle. They describe their heart as hidden and their soul taking flight when they let go of their safety glance, indicating that there are parts of themselves that they are afraid to show to others. Every word they speak feels like a lie, reinforcing the idea that they are living a life of pretense and are disconnected from their true feelings.
