Can I play old wordles I missed? ›

The New York Times opens archive of 1,000-plus past puzzles. Subscribers can go back and play any of the puzzles they missed—including the ones from the original site. If you can't get enough of Wordle, The New York Times might just have a solution to quench that insatiable addiction to the puzzle game.

Why was the Wordle Archive shut down? Since the acquisition last year, the NYT has moved to safeguard what is now its wholly owned intellectual property by placing pressure on Wordle affiliates to shut down their "unauthorized" recreations of the game's earlier daily puzzles, starting with the Wordle Archive in March.

Rejoice, Wordle lovers. The game's owner, the New York Times, has announced that paying subscribers will now be able to go back into an archive of over a thousand previous Wordle puzzles to play them at their leisure.

When did Wordle start? Wordle started as a humble independent game played only among friends and family of developer Josh Wardle in June 2021 (the first answer was "Cigar").

According to WordsRated's analysis, the best starting words for Wordle are CRANE (based on all available solutions) and SAUCY (based on remaining solutions as of Feb, 2024). For Normal mode, SLATE, SALET, ROATE and STARE are known to be some of the best alternative starting words for Wordle.

There is much speculation that one reason for its decline is because the New York Times bought the game. Many players were concerned that the game would become drastically different after the shift, but Wordle has not become harder or experienced any change in its gameplay. A second reason is knockoffs.

But knowing what's gone before is important, because Wordle answers don't repeat – so you could easily be wasting guesses.

Subscribers can now see and save their progress on past Wordle puzzles within the archive. Solvers can also browse through the calendar of past Wordle puzzles going back to June 2021, share their results with family and friends and get WordleBot analysis of their archive play.

If you activate it while on the Wordle page, you'll have the option to save the current game. You can save only once per day. You access your saved games by clicking on the right-hand tab. Use the left and right arrows to navigate saved games forward or backward in time.

Progress and play history on archived Wordle puzzles is only available if you have a New York Times account. The archive will not display progress on puzzles completed before your Wordle account was linked with your New York Times account.
