The Ladybug Festival (2024)

The Ladybug Festival is the first episode of season 2 of Ni Hao, Kai-Lan which aired on February 2, 2009 on Nick. In this episode, Tolee gets angry when Rintoo and Hoho don't listen to what he wants to say to them.

Plot[]

Kai-Lan and her animal friends are going to the Ladybug Festival today. Tolee brings his big panda backpack, where he brings binoculars, snacks, and his panda doll Pandy. Tolee gets his map, but everyone has already taken off without him, where he eventually catches up. They all then go hiking to the Ladybug Festival, where they watch various animals on the way. They then all stop at a fork in the road with four paths, where they stop and think which path to take. Tolee then gets his map, but Rintoo then interrupts him, suggesting that they go to the gray rock path, Kai-Lan stops and looks at Tolee, Hoho and Rintoo find a river at the end of the path. Tolee was about to explain the right path before Hoho interrupts him by suggesting to take the green leaf path. Kai-Lan is concerned. She's about ask Tolee what he is trying to say before Hoho's yelling interrupts them. It turns out that Hoho and Rintoo has found flowers at the end of the path.

Kai-Lan decides that they need to find the right path or they're going to miss the Ladybug Festival. She suggests that Tolee can help. She tries to tell Rintoo and Hoho that Tolee has something important to say, but she also gets interrupted by them. Tolee gets upset over the constant giggling and interruptions that Hoho and Rintoo were doing, and gets angry, where he sits by a rock with his hood on. Kai-Lan asks if Tolee is not coming because Hoho and Rintoo were not listening to him. Kai-Lan comes up with a solution; "listen to all of your friends, because even the quietest person may have something super important to say."

Kai-Lan stops Hoho and Rintoo just in time that they were going on the third path, stating that they were so loud that they couldn't listen to Tolee, which makes them feel bad and they apologize to Tolee. They then listen to him, which makes Tolee happy again, where he states according to his map that the path that they need to take is the last path, or the path with the branches. Taking the path with the branches, they finally arrive at the Ladybug Festival, where Ye-Ye arrives via his bicycle and they all get to watch the Ladybugs do their fan dance, where they close with a heart shape.

• Tolee: "But I have something important to say. I know which way to go! Why aren't Hoho and Rintoo listening to me?"

Trivia[]

• This is the very first episode of season 2. It's also the first episode that aired in 2009. One notable change is that "We Gotta Gotta Try to Find the Reason Why" is replaced with "Let's Find Out Why".
• This is the first episode where the main problem is solved by Kai-Lan herself, excluding Safari Pals and Kai-Lan's Trip to China, as the solution was found by her entirely via watching both Tolee sitting, and Hoho and Rintoo singing.
• This episode has the shortest time elapse between "Let's Find Out Why" and "We Got It", clocking in two minutes.
• This episode is also the second time that Tolee brings his big panda backpack filled with a lot of stuff that he keeps in. The first time he did that was in "Kai-Lan's Campout".
• It is revealed that Kai-Lan loves ladybugs very much.
• This is the second episode where the main problem is caused by two characters instead of one. The first time was in Kai-Lan's Carnival, and both episodes involve Rintoo and Hoho causing the main problem.
• This episode aired Groundhog Day 2009.
• In the storyboard version, The Hike Song had actual male voices singing it, but in the episode, Kai-Lan and her friends sang it.^[1]

• When Rintoo asks Kai-Lan what the hiking song is, one of his whiskers turns yellow for a single frame.

  During Hoho's solo line in the hiking song, his mouth disappears for a single frame.
