Chapter Text

15: I am not Daredevil!

Aunt May readily offered her garage to store all of June’s furniture. The garage itself was mostly empty but for Uncle Ben’s old car that neither Aunt May nor Peter could drive or part with, Raimi’s yellow 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88.

Peter promised to be there before June has to leave to hire Nelson & Murdock. Should she go to a different firm? Would it be better to accept both Harry and Norman’s offers to use the family lawyers? Probably. But the only thing getting her through the stress right now was that it was the best excuse of all time to naturally cross paths with Daredevil and Co.

Peter ended up not showing, surprise, surprise. She helped Harry with the couch and they had to figure out how to get it on top of his car, lovingly named the Frugal Flyer, a green 1994 VW Golf hatchback. It wasn’t as great for moving as her wagon was, but she didn’t have time to go grab it from where she was storing it. Who had a car in NYC, anyway, billionaires?

“I think we can get this on top,” Harry said. “And then we can get the back seats down and maybe get the recliner in the back. No idea what we’re going to do about the bed frame.”

“I miss my Desert Fox,” June grunted as she managed to shove the couch onto the top of the car, but they didn’t know how to secure it, so it just kinda sat there.

“Did you sell it?”

“Hell no,” June scoffed. “I had it shipped up here. It’s in a storage garage right now. Just an additional expense I can barely afford but I can’t get rid of it. It’s the first big purchase I’ve ever made. It’s my baby.”

Grateful and desperate for a distraction, she pulled her phone out to show Harry pictures of her car, the Desert Fox.

“Damn,” Harry whistled. “Yeah, that’s got more storage, but does it have better gas mileage?”

June laughed, “Probably not.”

“This baby is a hybrid. Customized it myself. Well, I told Dad’s mechanics how I wanted it customized when I was fifteen. I could probably figure out how to do it myself now, and that’s what counts.”

“Remind me again how you may be a rich kid, but you aren’t spoiled?” June elbowed him. “How many minimum wage hours did you work to pay off that completely remodeled, revamped, new used car?”

“I see your point, but if I can make it hybrid, shouldn’t I? Gotta save the planet one muffler at a time,” Harry grinned.

“I’ve been planning on converting Desert Fox into a hybrid, kit it out with all the modern safety features, but I haven’t had the time, the money, or the need.”

“Hey, good thing you’re dating an environmentally conscious and safety minded totally not spoiled rich kid,” Harry nuzzled his forehead into her hair. “You think we can turn that thing into an environmentally friendly Batmobile?”

“Packing first, then we plan on how to kit out my car to take down bad guys, vigilante style.”

“You start packing the smaller items in the back. I’m going to run down to the nearest hardware store and see if they have ropes and carabiners and stuff.”

“Thank you,” June sighed.

Harry returned with a large bag of straps to secure the couch. June managed to get all the valuable items inside the car. She felt like a Tetris champion.

“So the guy at the hardware store said we shouldn’t put the mattress and the couch up there at the same time because it’s too dangerous,” Harry said. “But I’m sure by the time I get back from the first trip Pete will finally get here and we can get the rest of the stuff you just gotta tell us what’s yours and what’s the roommate from hell’s problem.”

June started sniffling.

“Are you getting a cold?” Harry rushed to her.

“I’ve never had anyone help me move before,” June tried not to cry but it didn’t work, again. “This is the scariest move I’ve ever had to do. I thought getting woken up in the morning and told to pack was over now that I was an adult and I got out of the system and…”

“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” Harry hugged her. “You aren’t alone. You have a cool, smart, always late brother and a really awesome, handsome, rich, kinda smart…”

“You’re smart,” June mumbled into his chest.

“Not as smart as Pete,” Harry laughed.

“That’s an unfair comparison,” June managed to laugh, despite the overwhelming negative emotions. She couldn’t be sad or scared when wrapped in Harry’s arms. “He’s a freaky genius.”

Harry laughed some more, “Okay, okay. So I’m smarter than the average bear but not the average Parker, got it.”

June’s glad he said that because if she’d said it – and she’d wanted too – she would have said average bear and average spider and then Peter likely would have gotten very upset with her for revealing his identity for a silly malaphore.

“You should go find some lawyers to see if you need to protect yourself from legal suits and if you can try and get those six thousand dollars back.”

“Right, yes,” June nodded. Gotta go make a deal with the devil, she thought to herself.

The Devil was not in. It was just Foggy and he was very frazzled and looked very overworked.

“Hi, welcome to Foggy & Matt… I mean Nelson & Murdock… I’m sorry a lot going on but I still have time for paying clients.”

“Hold on a moment,” June paused, looked down at her phone, and then texted Peter.

June

Are you with Harry

Peter

Yes sorry I was late we’re getting all of Rumbles stuff first because I don’t think your roommate also has a 160lbs dog

June

Good idea I’m at Nelson & Murdock can you ask Harry if he can pay for the lawyers I still can’t text harry 100% of the time

Pete

Isn’t that the blind guy who gave me his card? How did he know I’m Spider-Man if he’s blind?

June

Can’t tell you that?

Peter

WAIT!

He’s DD isn’t he?

I’m so smart

How’d he figure me out?

Can you tell me that? Is the plastic plant yours?

June

ASK HARRY IF HE CAN PAY

Peter

Sorry!

He said yes and did that silly laugh head tilt thing he does when he thinks the answer is obvious

June

Thank you!

Also he figured it out because when he was blinded by chemicals in an accident is super boosted his remaining senses and also yes the plant is mine

Thank you for packing for me

Peter

Cool! Both the DD thing and also being my sister 😊

June

🖕

Peter

😱

June

*👍

But also 🖕

“I can pay,” June said.

“Oh cool,” Foggy let out a sigh of relief. “Why do you need a lawyer?”

“I was subletting but my roommate didn’t tell me that I wasn’t supposed to be there and I didn’t figure it out until she showed up last night to break the lease but also she was collecting rent money from me and not paying rent and her landlord sent her an eviction notice that she didn’t show me and I’m currently being evicted today but that’s not as big of a problem because my brother and my boyfriend and getting all my stuff out of the apartment and to my Aunt’s garage but also I want my six thousand dollars back.”

“I admire your lung capacity,” Foggy nodded. “We can serve her with a class D felony.”

“Also she has illicit drugs in her room, I’m pretty sure. If they find that in her room after I’ve moved out can I get in trouble for that?”

“No, but she’s in a lot of trouble. Do you have a drug use history?”

June frowned, “No?”

“You can lie to the cops, but not your lawyer.”

“I mean I got arrested for weed when I fourteen but that’s legal now.”

“Not for fourteen-year-olds. Is it on your record?”

“I don’t think so. They pinned that one on my ex because it wasn’t mine.”

“Okay, great,” Foggy nodded. “We should meet again next week and discuss possible follow-up actions. Do you want to pay for the consultation with cash, credit, check…”

“I don’t have the money on me,” June winced. “I can come back later with my boyfriend and pay.”

Foggy looked so incredibly tired, “That’s fine.”

“I just… he can pay but I kinda… gave all my money to my roommate who I thought was paying my rent and…”

“Just a heads up, while 6k is a felony, pursuing it from, like, getting your money back perspective is going to cost more than 6k. And New York doesn’t have automatic attorney’s fees. You’ll likely end up spending more money on legal fees than you’d get back if the court ordered her to pay you back. Really, all you’d get is less money and slapping her with a class D felony.”

“Oh,” June frowned. “I guess… it’s the principal of the thing, then.”

“I mean, we can ask for attorney’s fees if you want to sue for your money back in addition to pressing charges.”

“Honestly, she was a really bad roommate and I think… she’ll just do this to someone else if she doesn’t get consequences for this one. I don’t… enjoy the idea of making someone else into a felon, but if that’s what I have to work with in this system, then so be it.”

“Alright,” Foggy nodded. “Here’s my card, my partner’s card…”

Matt Murdock took that moment to burst into the room, stumbling a little bit from a limp, looking a little frazzled.

“Why is Spider-Man here?”

Foggy looked to June, over to Matt, let his jaw flap for a moment, and then finished handing June the business cards.

“Matt, please never open with that again,” Foggy winced.

“Is this because I forgot to shower this morning?” June sniffed herself. “I swear, if I smell that similar to Spidey I’m gonna scream.”

“You… aren’t Spider-Man,” Matt said.

“And you totally aren’t Daredevil,” June retorted before she could stop herself.

Foggy frowned at both of them and then snapped, “No vigilante business in the office. Just to clarify, everything we just talked about…”

“Totally real, completely a coincidence that I’m related to Spider-Man enough that apparently he can’t immediately tell the difference.”

“How did you know I’m Daredevil?” Matt squared his shoulders.

“I… said you aren’t Daredevil,” June bit back a smile. “Didn’t I?”

“Yes, you did,” Matt forced himself to relax. “Because I’m not Daredevil.”

“Stop evoking that name in the office,” Foggy said. “We’re going to pretend none of the last five minutes happened. Thank you for stopping by, Ms. Palmer. Matt, I’ll explain her case after you’ve clocked in.”

“Right, uh… nice to meet you…” Matt held his hand out in her general direction and she gleefully shook the hand of the Daredevil himself.

“June Palmer,” June said. “Roommate and landlord shenanigans. That’s your specialty, right?”

“Yup,” Matt popped the p.

“Thank you so much, both of you, for helping me. I have to get back and make sure that Harry and Peter don’t accidently pack anything that isn’t mine.”

“We’ll get back to you with a consultation fee,” Foggy shouted after her as she left.

“I thought she was Spider-Man,” Matt mumbled as the door closed. “She smells and sounds like Spider-Man.”

“Why would Spider-Man…”

“I gave him my card!”

“Why would you give Spider-Man your card when I told you I don’t want superhero BS in the office!”

Nelson & Murdock was a highlight of her day, even if today was awful and stressful and she hated it.
