Who is the manager?

Willy Sagnolwas appointed Georgia manager back in February 2021, and lost seven out of his first nine games in a dreadful start for the former French international.

The turning point came in October that year. Following defeat by Greece, Sagnol's men went 11 unbeaten, which included an impressive 2-0 win over Sweden.

Sagnol, a Champions League winner with Bayern Munich in his playing days, soon earned the respect from Georgia fans. He was then immortalised in Georgian football when he oversaw a nail-biting shootout victory against Greece in March.

'Qualifying for the European Championship is the most significant achievement in my career so far,' Sagnol told Georgian newspaperLego.ge.

'Three years ago, when I agreed on the deal, many people asked me - why are you going there?

'Now I can say that we worked a lot and achieved something. I'm happy and very happy as a coach and as a person.'

Sagnol earned 58 caps for France during a successful career. He spent a large part of his playing days for Bayern, where he won five Bundesliga titles and the 2001 Champions League.

Who is their star man?

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has had a difficult season but has still managed to become the shining star despite Napoli's poor results.

Napoli finished this campaign in 10th place just a year after winning the Serie A title when Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen scored a combined 45 goals.

Kvaratskhelia, 23, managed only 11 goals for his club during the most recent campaign but remains his country's leading marksman.

He is the third top-scorer in Georgia's history and has the chance to surpass Shota Arveladze andTemur Ketsbaia, who are both retired, on the nation's goalscoring charts.

If Georgia are to spring a surprise and qualify from Group F,Kvaratskhelia will need to find the form which helped propel Napoli to Serie A glory 12 months ago.

How did they qualify?

Georgia qualified for the play-offs through the Nations League route having finished fourth in Group A behind Spain, Scotland and Norway.

Sagnol's side beat Luxembourg 2-0 in the semi-finals before taking on Greece, who had overcome Kazakhstan 5-0 in the other play-off.

Nearly 45,000 fans packed in to the Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi for their historic clash with Greece, the shock winners of Euro 2004.

A nervy final ended 0-0 after extra-time before Georgia prevailed 4-2 on penalties, substitute Nika Kvekveskiri scoring the decisive spot-kick to spark wild celebrations.

It marked the first time they had reached a major tournament after 15 unsuccessful attempts. Georgians have played at the Euros when they were part of the Soviet Union but Euro 2024 will be the first time they've been there as an independent nation.

Georgia are the lowest-ranked nation of any country competing at Euro 2024.

A momentous debut awaits for Georgia, who may fancy their chances of sneaking through to the knockout round as one of the four best third-placed teams.
