He may not have been a star player but people expected him to take over for Brady at some point so saying the media wasn't paying attention to what he was up to isn't exactly accurate. He has been getting coverage since jump, even if he only got to start a few games. A lot of that was probably due to his looks and Brady's age. (Tom, Peyton and Brees were the oldest active QBs until Peyton retired so everyone's expecting Tom to sooner rather than later.)

But when you are talking the chance to pull an entire family out of the cycle of poverty, then all bets are off. Just this week on the sports show, major figures in the game were saying, "I wish the NFL would let us sign a waiver stating that we understand the risks, and then back off and let us play. It's a violent sport and we love it." One dude made a point that is hard to debate: he said, "if it were not for football I would very well have ended up dead or in jail before 40, so even if I develop CTE, at least I took care of my mother/grandmother---I would not make a different decision even if I knew that I would meet a fate such as so many others in their retirement years. This is anecdotal, but all the men who have committed suicide(except Aaron Hernandez, but he had complicating issues) have been lineman types.
